March 17, 2020

Dear Westran R-1 School District,

After several weeks of preparation, we have made the decision to be closed starting Wednesday, March 18th. We are planning to resume school on April 6. We will continue to make updates on this situation via textcaster, the school website and app. If you are not signed up to receive updates via textcaster, we highly encourage you to do so. You can sign up by visiting our website at Between now and then, we will continue to reevaluate this situation.

Alternative Methods of Instruction: The District sent home enrichment packets with elementary students as well as lessons and assignments for the middle and high school students. These packets and assignments have been provided to all students. Teachers have given instructions to students on completion expectations. If you have any questions about these packets/assignments this evening, our staff will be available from 8:00-11:30 Wednesday morning at school. Please contact the school or email your child’s teacher during this time. If your child was not in school today, please pick up his/her packet/assignments tomorrow morning.

Meals for Students: Lunches will still be offered to ALL STUDENTS, beginning tomorrow, consisting of grab and go meals.  Meals will be FREE to ALL STUDENTS. Please contact the elementary office at 660-277-3666 by 10:00 a.m. the day of, if you would like meals to be made for your child. Meals will be available for pick-up from 11:00-11:45. You may pick these up at the door by the elementary foyer. (A meal pick-up sign will be posted on the window.)

Special Education Services: We are concerned about the educational needs of our students who require special education services, but protecting their health has to take priority at this time. As we receive guidance from DESE and are able to have a better understanding of the impact of COVID-19, we will make contact with our parents/guardians and discuss how we will address their child’s services. In the meantime, students will have a packet to work on during this closure that addresses their IEP goals, so they can practice skills they have been working on.

In addition to school being canceled, all extra-curricular activities, practices and school sponsored events have also been canceled. This includes all Spring sporting events. The building or campus will not be open for students or community members from March 17th through April 3rd.

During these times, the safety of our students, staff and community members must be our number one priority. We will continue to monitor the developments of COVID-19 and will update all Westran families as we are given the information. Again, thank you for your patience, cooperation and understanding as we navigate these challenging times.
